About the Railroad

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad began operating passenger excursions in 1988. The railroad uses historic diesel and steam locomotives to travel along tracks built in the late 1800s.

Trips depart from Bryson City and follow rivers, forests, and mountain ridges. Large windows and open-air gondola cars give riders clear views of the scenery. On select days, steam engines are used, adding a classic railroad feel to the ride.

Each trip includes narration about local history, the region’s logging past, and the construction of nearby lakes and dams.

Train Schedule

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad schedule varies by season. Most trains run between March and December.

During peak months like summer and fall, departures are offered several days each week. Special events, including themed rides and steam excursions, are scheduled throughout the year.

Purchasing Tickets

Tickets are available in several seating classes. Guests can choose from:

Coach seating

Crown class

First class

Open-air gondola cars

Private or premium options on select rides

Ticket prices depend on the route, seating class, and time of year. The Polar Express and fall foliage trips often cost more due to demand.

The Train Route

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad route map includes two main scenic journeys:

Nantahala Gorge Excursion

This popular route travels along the Nantahala River. Riders see whitewater rafters, steep rock walls, and mountain views.

Tuckasegee River Excursion

This route follows the Tuckasegee River and crosses historic bridges. It passes through small towns and quiet countryside.

Each route offers different scenery, but both provide a relaxed way to experience the Smoky Mountains from a unique perspective.

Finding a Place to Park

Parking is available near the Bryson City depot. Great Smoky Mountains Railroad parking includes both free and paid options within walking distance of the station.

Arriving at least 45 minutes before departure is helpful, especially during the fall and holiday seasons when lots fill quickly.

The Railroad’s Museum

The Museum is located inside the Bryson City depot and features model trains, railroad artifacts, and interactive displays. It is a great stop for children and anyone interested in rail history.

Admission is often included with certain ticket types, but guests should confirm details when purchasing tickets.

Best Times to Go

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad operates most of the year, but certain seasons stand out. Fall and the holiday season are two of the most popular times to ride. Both offer a unique experience and often are the first spots to fill up.

Fall for the Foliage

Fall is one of the most popular times to ride. The fall foliage season usually peaks from mid-October through early November and makes the pictures of your trip so much more vibrant.

Mountainsides turn shades of red, orange, and gold. Clear skies and cool air make the ride even more pleasant.

Winter for the Polar Express

The Polar Express Great Smoky Mountains Railroad event runs during the holiday season. Based on the popular book and movie, this train ride includes hot chocolate, cookies, music, and a visit from Santa.

Families are encouraged to wear pajamas, and the train is decorated with holiday lights. This event is one of the most requested seasonal experiences in the region.
